Willie Nelson
With a huge Lone Star flag flying high behind him and his band, Willie Nelson opened his show at Merriweather Post Pavilion with "Whiskey River."
Then for the next 2 hours or so, he then did a 're-run' his entire career with dozens of songs reminiscing beyond his own music to the inspiration of others.
At first, it appeared that Willie might give his own tracks short 'air-time'.
"Crazy" and "Nightlife" were compressed into an entertaining but hardly inspired 'medlei', and only "Funny How Time Slips Away" really rivalled the true emotion Nelson later brought to more than 1 of Kris Kristofferson's tunes.
After, Nelson saluted Irving Berlin, OF "Blue Skies" and Hoagy Carmichael "Georgia on My Mind" and "Star Dust" JUST TO MENTION A FEW, he returned to some of his earliest songs, including a very moving version of "Hello Walls"
Nelson also got a chance to play a some excellent solos on his trusty old guitar, when the rest of the band weren't featured on several instrumental and gospel numbers.
To the crowd's sheer delight, a camera crew filmed Willie Nelson's performance of Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene".
